In Print: Magazine publishers feel confident about the year ahead, thanks to robust December issues.
Magazine publishers are feeling positive about the year ahead, a confidence boost courtesy of December ad page increases. As consumers begin spending more, magazines such as Good Housekeeping (up 6.5% in December) and Food & Wine (up 1%) are proof positive that marketers are also feeling more confident. Noting that certain categories, especially beauty, are being "aggressive" this holiday season, publishing companies such as Meredith and Time Inc. are optimistic the trend will continue. On Line: Internet users look to social networking sites for advice on their holiday shopping.
Internet users will, no doubt, be doing much of their holiday shopping online, and they are looking to social networking sites for information. According to a new study, 27% of online shoppers will go to sites such as Facebook for recommendations from friends, and nearly half (45%) will use these sites to research items, compare prices and look for offers. Out of Home: A new Times Square venue provides a tremendous opportunity for advertisers.
When New York City closed streets to vehicular traffic for its new pedestrian plaza, a tremendous venue for advertisers was created. Radio stations' efforts to grow online are clearly paying off. Online radio is expected to grow by double digits over 2008, reaching $441 million in revenue this year.
